Dyson’s Bladeless Fan Can Trap Tiny Pollutants, But Is That Enough To Make Me A Fan?

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to pay a second visit to Dyson’s development facility in Johor, this time to take a look at its POLAR testing standard that’s currently used in its air purification products.

During the few hours I spent over at the facility, I learned about how POLAR was meant as complementary addition to already existing test standards, and how it measures the efficiency of an air purifier using metrics that make more sense in the real world. Much more recently, Dyson gave Vulcan Post the opportunity to experience their air purification technology for ourselves by sending over the Pure Cool TP04—the most recent addition to their line of purifier fans.

The TP04 wasreleased in April last year, coming with a bunch of features thatimmediately placed it in the ranks of class-leading performers.

Among other things, the TP04 touted the ability to capture 99.95% of pollutants and allergens in the air, with particulates as small as 0.1 microns able to be captured in the process (for comparison, a strand of human hair measures in at a thickness of 75 microns).

Some of the more commonly known pollutants particulates that the TP04 is able to capture include Benzene gas, pollens from flowers, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning agents, mold, bacteria, and allergens from pets.

And as part of thefamily of devices tested under the POLAR standard, the TP04 isclaimed to be able to effectively clean the air of rooms as big as290 square feet using its far-reaching bladeless fan setup.

Add all of this toother features such as an informative LCD display, plenty of optionsfor speed, oscillation, and energy-saving, and the ability to connectremotely via apps to control the device or receive air cleanlinessreports.

Now this sounds niceand all, but how did the TP04 perform during daily use?

Premium And Thoughtfully Made

Upon unboxing the unit, I noticed immediately that the TP04 is built solid, with the unit clad plenty in hard plastics that didn’t once feel cheap. There was a nice heft to the weigh of the unit—this one being a pedestal model that’s supposed to be placed on the floor (as opposed to a smaller table-top model that’s also available)

From the offset, theTP04 is extremely easy to use. Right after unboxing the unit, all weneeded to do was install two sets of particularly thick filters—thehigh-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that’s used fortrapping thins like pollen, dust mites, dander, and cigarette smoke,and the carbon filter that’s meant to remove odours as well asother volatile organic compounds and gasses.

Beyond that, allthat was left to do is plug the unit in and let it perform itsduties, which it did without any fuss,

Throughout the period of testing, I personally found a few things that I quite liked about the TP04, one of it being its ability to oscillate up to 350 degrees..

With my desksituated approximately 10 feet away, I was able to feel thecirculation of air even with the speed of the TP04 set to half,indicating its ability to really reach far corners of a room ifnecessary.

But it must bementioned that although the TP04 is able to drive clean air withample power, it doesn’t necessarily offer the ability to cool thespace, so be aware of that fact if you also require a solution thatcomes with temperature control.

Additionally, Ireally appreciated the LCD display that allowed me to quickly andeasily understand the device settings and current air conditionsranging from how much particulates or pollutants there were insidethe room, and how much longer the air filters would last before theyrequired a change.

Plus, the simpleremote controller that the TP04 came with was also easily navigableand handily attached itself to the top of the TP04 via a magnet—justone of the many thoughtful features Dyson chose to bundle with inwith the design.

Verdict

Now considering theway air purification works, it was hard for us to gauge theperformance of the TP04 in a tangible manner, but what I can safelytell you is that throughout the duration of our use—even untiltoday—the air in the office felt somewhat cleaner and easier tobreathe.

Couple this with theease-of-use afforded by the TP04, and it really becomes one of thosethings you can buy, plug in, and trust it to work well for a verylong time without the need for human interference.

All in all, the PureCool TP04 represents some of the best air-purifying tech that moneycan buy, plus a host of additional features that go beyond what you’dexpect to find from a conventional air purifier.

If you’re looking for something to help you manage unclean air in your home or office space, the TP-04 will undoubtedly be able to accomplish the task even in considerably polluted spaces. The only caveat is that it’s pretty expensive, retailing at a price of RM2,829 or SGD899.
