IKEA Hires 200 Roles For Upcoming Jurong Outlet – Amends S$22K Manager Salary To Up To S$14K

[Update: 13 October 2020]

When Vulcan Post first reported about IKEA’s open position of a selling manager which pays up to S$22,000 per month, it went viral online.

However, its job listing on MyCareersFuture has since been edited — instead of a salary range of S$9,150 to S$22,000, it has been amended to S$9,150 to S$14,250 instead.

Corrina Schuler, the Head of Corporate Communication at IKEA Southeast Asia told AsiaOne that the initial salary range was “incorrect” and cited it as an administrative error.

“We corrected our job listing and apologise for any confusion this may have created.”

She explained further that the listed gross monthly salary is simply a means to indicate the full salary potential of the job, but the actual salary would be dependent on the candidate’s skills and experience.

According to the job listing, this particular role has received 163 applications so far since it was first posted on 25 September 2020.

Applications for this role will close on 25 October 2020.

Swedish furniture retailer IKEA will be opening its third outlet in Singapore at Jem shopping mall in 2021, replacing Robinsons department store.

Spanning 70,000 square feet, the new three-storey outlet will house the full range of IKEA products and a restaurant.

There will be no playground or built-in warehouse unlike its other outlets, which span about 400,000 square feet.

This smaller concept within a shopping centre will be the first of its kind in the region, noted Jaap Doornbos, IKEA retail director for Singapore and Vietnam.

With this new outlet opening, IKEA Singapore is looking to hire 200 people.

Some of the available positions that are listed on its career page include staff planning specialist, safety & security specialist, sales and support specialist, IKEA food team leader and kitchen production manager.

On MyCareersFuture, IKEA Singapore is also hiring a commercial manager for its Jurong outlet, offering a monthly salary of S$5,000 to S$7,000.

In total, MyCareersFuture listed 11 available roles from IKEA Singapore and the highest-paying role is a selling manager, which pays up to S$22,000 per month.

IKEA Sees Drop In Revenue

IKEA’s Southeast Asian stores has seen a 7.4 per cent drop in revenue in its last financial year. It posted S$966 million in sales after facing closures of up to 2.5 months, supply challenges and limits on building capacity.

In Singapore alone, IKEA’s turnover was at S$304 million — this is about 10 per cent less than last year.

“Our Singapore stores endured the longest closures of any in our region — at 73 days, 20 per cent of the year. Our Ikea food operations were closed even longer and we have curtailed operations even upon opening,” said Doornbos.

“Given these challenging circumstances, we are very satisfied that the turnover during the last financial year dropped just 10 per cent — half of the share of the days that the stores were closed.”

He added that these results are driven by a “very strong e-commerce business”.

By the end of the financial year, they received over 525,000 online orders, which amounted to S$135 million in online sales — more than double the company’s e-commerce turnover from the previous year, according to IKEA.

In terms of future business plans, IKEA shared that it will enter Mexico and the Philippines next year.
