Razer Phone 3 Reportedly Cancelled As Razer Lays Off 30 Staff From Its Phone Division

The Razer Phone 2 was launched just a few months back in November 2018, but it seems like the gaming firm is already making a quick exit from the mobile phone market.

Droid-Life recently reported on an anonymous tip which revealed that Razer had cancelled the development on the Razer Phone 3 and that it is laying off the bulk of its staff associated with the phone division.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that several engineers who worked on the original Razer Phone and the Razer Phone 2 had left the company this month.

In response to this, Razer released an official statement:

The firm is apparently undergoing a restructuring process, which forced them to cease several projects. This also meant that they had to let go about 30 employees of its 1,500-strong staff.

Those remaining will be moved to different parts of the company.

In fact, the tip mentioned that Razer is keeping enough employees around to work on future software updates, such as the Android Pie update which was announced yesterday.

Razer also announced on Saturday (February 16) that it’s ceasing operations of its Razer Games Store on 28 February 2019 as part of the company’s realignment plans.

It added that it will be “investing in other ways to deliver great content and introduce game promotions through Razer Gold,” referring to its virtual credits system.
